Sometimes we get headaches and have no idea what the trigger could be. There are few reasons related to muscle and spinal health that might have to do with your headaches though. We’ve listed a few surprising reasons you might have a headache and ways chiropractic care can help.

Headaches and Chiropractic Care

There are several different types of headaches, and chiropractic care can help with each one. There are tension, muscle contraction, trauma, cervicogenic headaches, and headaches caused by neck pain.

Each one can be worked out through chiropractic care. Usually spinal adjustments are performed to help restore proper alignment and function to the nervous system to help your body heal naturally without the use of prescription medicine or shots.

1. Tension Headaches

Tension headaches usually occur with dull pain or pressure on the back of your head or in your forehead. It has been said that they feel like your head is in a vice grip that is tightening. They are called stress headaches and occur most often in adults. If they occur more than 15 days a month, they are considered to be chronic, but any amount lower is considered to be episodic.

2. Muscle Contraction Headache

Muscle contraction headaches are very common and occur as an achy, dull, or tightness around the scalp. The exact cause of these headaches is uncertain, but could be caused by straining of certain muscles. Those muscles could be in your neck, jaw, shoulders, scalp, or face. There are several different triggers and some triggers may not be the same trigger for every person, but a chiropractor can do x-rays and give you an examination to figure out exactly where the problem is coming from.

3. Trauma Headache

Trauma headaches are also called post-traumatic headaches. They usually occur within seven days of experiencing some sort of trauma. They are similar to migraines in the way that they cause sensitivity to light, dizziness, insomnia, memory problems, sensitivity to sound, and fatigue. Trauma is the cause of these headaches, but other factors increase the risk of the longevity of a headache. Some of these factors include having a family history of migraines or a pre-existing headache.

4. Cervicogenic Headache

Cervicogenic headaches occur when there is a pain in the neck. There must be a disorder or a lesion within the cervical spine or around the neck to be able to classify a headache as being cervicogenic. Neck pain can also cause other kinds of headaches, and migraines, so it is important to make sure that there is nothing more serious going on with your neck that could be causing a headache.

5. Neck Pain

There are many causes of neck pain, and a symptom that happens alongside the muscle pain can be headaches. Pinched nerves, vertebrae out of place, and poor posture can all be causes of pain in the neck. This is why chiropractic care can come in handy. Chiropractors can realign the vertebrae to release the nerves that have been pinched and ease any pain that has occurred. Vertebrae being out of alignment cases nerve interference, which can disrupt communication between the brain and body parts that are associated with that nerve. Headaches are usually caused by the bones in the upper part of the spine called the cervical spine.
